With fantastic weather for our non fishing day at Volivoli Beach Resort we decided to start fishing a day earlier than scheduled which turned out to be a great move, We had no idea we’d be chasing Yellow Fin Tuna on light tackle top water action! After a couple of beers and a brief discussion about the follow days fishing we all hit the hay in preparation for a 0730 start.
We woke to brilliant conditions so with a quick bite to eat and plenty of coffee we were ready to go, The only sound to be heard on the way out was the sound of the wake we were creating cruising on glassed out waters, With a reasonably long haul this made for a very enjoyable journey to the grounds where we would target GT’s with heavy popping gear including a range of Carpenter rods, Shimano Stell’a and Saltiga spin gear and lures coming out the wazoo.
While on our way we noticed a nice work up of birds, even though the water temps have dropped the Yellowfin are still around in good numbers, With Y/F up to 40kg leaping to the air its fair to say that Neville and John could not believe their eyes as both being from NZ they simply do not see them anymore.
Although they were there and we could see them the school was flighty so John and Nev did well to get single casts in as we approached the school, First cast Nev hooked a nice fish around 10kg on light gear and a small Sebile sinking bait about 65gms, he angled well all the way into the ice for Sashimi.
As I mentioned the school was flighty to say the least so we decided to pop the reefs edge for our target species….GT keep an eye out for those pics in the next couple of days.
