Huge GT’s in Fiji with Half Cast Charters

Well, after a good morning’s start boating a couple of solid Yellowfin Tuna on light tackle its time to hit the reef in search of the Huge GT’s in Fiji with Half Cast Charters.

Fishing a stretch of water between Viti Levu and the Yasawa Island’s these guys were in for a treat! Huge GT’s make their home here with fast moving currents, deep bommie walls, nutrient rich waters and schooling bait fish making this a haven for big fish!

Joining us all the way from NZ are Neville Hagland and his wife Faye, both returnee’s of Volivoli Beach Resort and John from Yeehaa Fishing Tackle NZ . (If your in need of any specialized fishing gear these guys are the go to guys in NZ) Although Faye is not a fisho she sure knows her stuff and is pretty handy with the camera.

Fishing an outgoing current on the edge of the reef John is on the board first with a nice GT to start the day, His sword of choice being a Carpenter Rod coupled with a Shimano Stella SW 10000 reel loaded with 80lbs braid and 130Lbs leader, casting a Sebile Splasher 152mm, It was easy to see that John is an experienced angler as he made short work of this fish and judging from the smile on his dial pretty stoked to be in Fiji GT fishing!

Next on the board soon after is Neville with a great little red bass, if these guys got anywhere near the size GT’s get to we would all be in big trouble, These feisty red devils demand respect and have been know to take many EXPENSIVE lures down to Davey’s tropical Locker never to be seen again!

The afternoon was fairly solid with many GT’s boated photographed and released healthy. The assistance of a salt water deck wash to keep water running over the gills while hooks are removed definitely aids in a healthy release.

Knowing and reading about BIG GT’s being up on the reef as soon as it was deep enough we decided to give the ledges a break and try our luck on the tops of the reef (always a risky move with sharp coral just waiting to cut you off) and before long it was Neville who was hooked up on light tackle that turned out to be a nice Queenie putting on a brilliant display of acrobatics.

As Neville’s Queenie slipped back to safety it was Johns turn again with another solid GT, this fella dragged him side to side, front and back choosing to make his dash for safety horizontally in every direction possible.

Throughout the day a mixture of big chugging poppers and sleek subtle stick baits were used with what seemed to be a stick bait day landing more fish on the stick baits than poppers, One stand out was Johns nice big Coral trout pictured above.

All up day one of 3 was a great day fishing with Neville, Faye and John. Even though we did not boat “the Big One” it was a great day had by all. Many fish were caught and released with a couple of Yellowfin Tuna and Spanish Mackerel on Ice for dinner we were happy. To top off the day my daughter Tylah was waiting on the beach when we returned in time to watch the sun go down…
