GT’s, Wahoo, Walu and Sailfish packed this 4 day charter!
Arriving at Volivoli Beach Resort were Anita, Brian, Ryan and Lauren Keith a family of keen anglers from Sydney Australia. Scheduled for 4 days of fishing the weather forecast was in our favor with light trade winds predicted.
Day one saw an early start so after a couple of quick cups of coffee and some brecky we were off, Heading north for the day to chase GT’s . On the hour long boat trip I had a chance to chat with Ryan, a recent guest on board Nomad Charter’s trip off the coast of northern Queensland. I soon discovered Ryan knows he is talking about when it comes to GT fishing. I guess as a marine Biologist he has to be out in the field getting first hand experience:)
Loaded with all his own gear including, a Carpenter Monster Hunter 80H / Stella 18000 for his popping outfit and a Shimano GT Special / Saragosa 20000 for the backup outfit, its fair to say Ryan came prepared. He mentioned as all anglers do he has spent hours researching the area on Google Earth so when I let him know which reef we were to spend the day I could see the excitement come across his face.
8 GT’s were landed on day one a new record for Ryan to catch more than 3 GT’s in one day! Well done mate.
The first part of day 2 was spent casting the reefs edges close to the resort resulting in some good strikes and a nice Bluefin and GT boated photographed and released.
The afternoon of day 2 we decided to head out although a westerly had decided to blow up to 20knots making the seas a little choppy, A quick stop at the Malake passage to make our contribution well shall I say Ryans contribution to the reef getting smoked on a solid GT! Goodbye pencil popper 🙁
After Ryans contribution we decided to do a little trolling as the wind picked up to over 25knots making it pretty much impossible to cast for GT’s safely. With the winter Wahoo arriving in the previous few days and countless pack attacks that was the target species however unfortunately we were not able to boat any Wahoo on this afternoon session, Fortunately we were able to pack the chilly bin with Walu (Spanish Mackerel)
The Walu were not the only fish to be boated that afternoon…a nice double hook up as 2 reels screamed off. One in particular sounded different, As Brian picked up the rod a Sailfish leaped in the air tail walking across the water only a few meters from the transom!
15 minutes later Brian had landed his first Saily and his biggest fish to date! after a couple of quick pics this fish was released alive and kicking.
Day 3 and it was Anita’s turn to get her PB so we headed out around 830 again to troll the current lines for Wahoo, It wasn’t long before a massive Hoo crashed down on the short corner and peeled off line with a blistering first run which was soon boated and put on ice! This time it was Ryans PB Wahoo landed..Anita’s turn is still to come.
The afternoon on day 3 was spent popping for more GT’s countless pack attacks of GT’s meant we went home tired and sore from brutal fights, 7 GT’s a few Barracuda, Bluefin and Longtom’s were caught.
The last day for the Keiths was set to be a half day charter. Anita’s strike! Once again it was not long before Anita was doing battle with what turned out to be her PB Wahoo! Anita angled this hoo with ease until it saw the boat and decided to peel out another 100 odd meters of hard fought line…
All in all I think they all did pretty well with everyone catching their biggest fish to date!
